I was asked to make a remix of hemels huis for this album. On a very tight deadline. Two days to come up with something and make it happen, so that became 2 days and a bit of the night.
I wanted to emphasise the hopeful theme of the song, but making sure that it also had some weight to it. In my mind that looked like a desolate Armenian landscape, so that’s what I tried to translate to music.
The verse was written on the piano, including the fake modulation just before you hit the chorus. After recording that part, I went out for a walk with my dog and most of the song took shape then. (Just being outside and walking seems to get me the greater part of all musical ideas).
After that it was a matter of finding the right sounds, drum samples and putting it all together. In the second verse I played around with a more urban sound as a “back to reality” moment.
I’ve always thought that middle-eastern music has a special way of getting to deeper emotions. I wanted to have some kind of middle eastern singer sample on the song and somehow after a some googling I found one that fitted in the song almost perfectly, no tempo or key changes needed!
Hope you’ll enjoy the song, click on the buy link for the full album:)
